The Department offers a variety of regular and accelerated courses leading to proficiency in Spanish and Portuguese. Basic, Intermediate, and Advanced undergraduate courses in grammar, composition, conversation, literature and culture are offered every semester on campus and in summer study abroad programs in Costa Rica, Argentina, Spain and Brazil. Advanced placement for work completed in high school may be granted; consult with Admissions and the Department for current information. For information on retroactive credit, please contact the main office of the Department.
If you want to take Spanish, and have had no previous experience with the language, you should sign up for SPAN 104. In order to register for 104, you will need to make an appointment with the Advising Specialist
for the Department of Spanish & Portuguese by calling (785) 864-3500, and bring a copy of your high school transcript to your meeting. If you do have previous experience with Spanish, you will need to take a placement exam to determine which class would be appropriate. The placement exam can be taken online by clicking here.
After finishing the exam, you will receive a score accompanied by the name of the course into which you should enroll. Should you receive a score of 700 or better and wish to test out of the language proficiency requirement, you should make an appointment with the advising specialist. If you want to take Portuguese and have had no previous experience with either Portuguese or Spanish, you should sign up for PORT 104. Otherwise, please consult with the department to determine which class would be appropriate.
If you are trying to enroll in a basic language course and there isn't a spot open, you may be able to put yourself on a waitlist in Enroll & Pay
. To see classes with available spots on the waitlist, uncheck the box that says “Show open classes only”. Classes with a yellow triangle have waitlists available. Select that class. At the next screen that shows, check the box that says “Waitlist if full”. Continue the enrollment process as normal. The course will show up on your schedule as waitlisted. To determine whether you have been moved into the class from the waitlist, check your schedule. Enroll & Pay is updated once a day, and the system will enroll you automatically if a space becomes available. If a class shows as open (with green circle) but the system will not allow you to enroll, a space has become open in the class but the system has yet to move someone from the waitlist into that open spot. Please remember NOT to enroll in another class at the same time as the class you waitlisted. If you are enrolled in a class at the same time as the waitlisted class, the system will skip over you and put the next person on the waitlist into the class.
